What is mentorship?

There have been countless times within my life where I have been lost and confused. I have experienced many moments when I wasn't sure how I would be able to go on. Life seemed hoped.

How did I keep going on? With the help of others.

My freshman year was one of the hardest times of my life. It was the first time being out on my own. I was away from everyone I knew and loved. My typical strengths of school and sports were failing me. Everything seemed to be falling apart in front of me.

Luckily, I had the support of countless women in my life who helped me push through. Though she was hours away, my mother was always a phone call away ready to provide encouragement. My ministry leader comforted me through countless tears. I even had teammates who would listen to me as I discussed my trials and hardships.

This was no doubt a difficult period in my life. There is no way that I could have made it through on my own.

I needed help.

We all need help sometimes.

One of the most important ways to give or receive help is through mentorship.

Dream Mentorship was founded on the idea that mentorship not only has the ability to help mentees reach their goals but also to change the entire trajectory of someone's life. Without this type of guidance, there is room for mistakes. On our own, we often take the wrong steps, procrastinate for long periods of time, or even give up on our dreams altogether.

Thus, we are stronger together. We are more focused when we have an accountability partner. We waste less time when we know the exact move we need to make. We won't give up on our dreams if we have someone helping us along the way.

We need mentorship.

"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself." - Oprah Winfrey

Sure, there are other forms of receiving direction, such as a reverse recruiter. These individuals can help you find a career fitted towards your goal. They can give direction and guidance, too. However, do they really know you? Will they be there in 10 years when you finally obtain the life of your dreams? Reverse recruiters can lead you in the direction you're looking to go, but they don't provide an underlying base of friendship.

Maybe your co-workers possess some of the life experience you crave. You can definitely ask for their help. They might even be willing to talk with you about their own path. However, they might not; your co-workers might be focused on maintaining a professional relationship. Oftentimes, they will be willing to talk with you, but they are not committed to continual dialogue on how to reach your dream.

Therefore, mentorship is needed.

Mentorship provides the relationship to a willing and helpful friend who wants you to reach your goals and dreams. There is not an underlying motive for their assistance. Not only do they want you to help you, but they also want to see you succeed. They are excited to provide input that gives you direction. In addition, they often know the path that you are trying to take. Especially at Dream Mentorship, we provide mentors that possess a similar career or life path that you desire.

There is no doubt that there are multiple avenues to find guidance on how to reach your goals. However, we believe that mentorship is the best way to attain your dream life. Mentors provide much needed direction. Most importantly, however, mentors are lifelong friends that want the best for you.

Mentorship is a blessing.

I know that I would not be where I am today without the help and mentorship around me. I am beyond thankful to have women in my life who will speak truth and guide me on this path of life. Mentorship has been such a gift in my life, and I know it can be for you, too.

In 30 years, from now, you don't want to look back at your life and wonder "What could have been?" In a recent article posted by Dream Mentorship, there are many different aspects that lead to women not living their best life; a few of these include societal expectations, work-life balance, financial inequities, and lack of support and mentorship. Don't let this be you. Seek mentorship and accomplish your dreams.
