It is fair to say that I have reviewed a good amount of resumes. I have seen the non-existent ones, where the individual hands a blank page and says, “I don’t know where to start” or “I don’t have any experience to add”. Well, here is good news for you, Rome wasn’t built in day, meaning resume writing is a skill and it takes time. You don’t have to feel defeated. I had to learn resume writing myself. Working as a graduate assistant in Career Services helped foster my desire to help people. While working as a resume editor, I learned the skills needed for resume writing and what employers are looking for in a resume. I understand that anyone looking for a job wants to present a resume that stands out, a resume that gets you hired, and that is why I am taking the time to share some tips on writing a resume that is exceptional.
Without sounding too cliche, it is important to have a resume that is concise, professional and in a great format. Choose a format that works for you and stick to it. Do not try to be fancy. Use a good font, minimize the use of unnecessary words and outline clearly each section of relevant information.
It usually takes an employer or recruiter about 30 seconds to look at a resume. Your first 30 seconds matter. Make it count. Use bullets, bold fonts, and indention to get your resume to stand out. Put relevant information on your resume. Also, it is necessary to use white or tan resume papers to print your resume. You may wonder what that is. Yes, resume papers exist. Just go to Walmart, Target or any other store and they should have that available. Having your resume on a resume paper makes a difference, trust me.
Please get someone to proof read your resume. Ask a friend, a family member, a mentor, anyone who can help. It is best not to have grammatical or typographical errors on your resume. If you don’t know who to ask, I am offering to help. Send me an email with a draft of your resume and I will be happy to look over it for you.
If you are still freaking out, here is a recommendation for you. You can always get your resume reviewed, edited and professionally curated by professional resume writers like resumewriters.
I hope this has been helpful. If you have more questions, I will be happy to help. Send me a message, let’s connect and let’s get that resume to be the best.
