After graduating from college, I thought my career would jumpstart. It didn't. As any college graduate presumed, I thought things would take off for me, get an entry-level job offer in my field, move out of my parents' house, and start to build up my resume. However, 2020 had other plans. COVID-19 hit, and I was struggling to find a position anywhere.
Companies-though advertising that they were hiring for entry-level roles- were not accepting applicants. They were looking for specific people who had 10+years of experience and a list of accomplishments. Not ready college graduates looking for a spot to fill in.
With constant frustration and consistent disappointment clouding my mind, I began to doubt myself, especially my skills and capability. "Something is missing," I thought, regarding my resume. It wasn't until I found Dream Mentorship that I gained confidence in my ability and was finally able to put it to use.
Not even a month into the internship program, I was standing in for Dream Mentorship as the Community Engagement Coordinator. My days soon became filled with endless emails, phone calls, and arranging meetings. I was thriving in the new fast-paced environment. Still, it proved to be challenging at times. Luckily, I was not alone.
Thankfully, many of my assignments and tasks were in collaboration with one or all of the interns. The Dream Team, that's what we called ourselves. Through the teamwork, I was able to get to know each intern, both on a professional and personal level. It didn't take long for a friendship to develop and take form, and I found what had been missing.
Dream Mentorship helped me find what I was missing all along. Dream Mentorship helped me find my tribe. A family full of strong, inspiring, and encouraging women. Like any family, each of us came from a different background, belief system, and state. And though we had only met each other through a screen and known one another for less than six months, I felt like I knew them from my high school days.
Through various tasks and new opportunities, I found myself thriving, both in my professional and personal life. I rediscovered my self-worth and capabilities, attained new skills, and gained a new understanding of what I want to do with my life, both personal and professional. All of this was possible because I surrounded myself with like-minded women.
